Simple Things You Can do to Save Energy in Your Home
1) Have your system professionally cleaned and maintained annually. Yea, I know we’re supposed to say that because it’s good for business but consider this fact: Running your heating system for one season is comparable to driving your car over 200,000 miles. Would you run your car that long without any maintainence? I didn’t think so. An annual cleaning by a professional will prevent unexpected repairs, maintain your system’s efficiency and improve the quality of your indoor air.
2) Install a programmable thermostat. This is especially helpful if you are away from the house all day. A programmable thermostat will allow you to set the temperature back when you leave and come back up when you return. When properly used, a programmable thermostat can save you as much as $180 a year.
3) Seal your heating and cooling ducts. The Ductwork moves the air from the furnace to the rooms in your home can be a big energy waster. Sealing and insulating your ductwork can save as much as 20% on your energy bill.
4) Change you filter regularly. Or upgrade to a High Efficient air cleaner. Furnace filters don’t just clean your air, they keep your equipment components clean to. Like the integrated fan control (circuit boards), fan motor and fan blades. More importantly the filter keeps your evaporator coil clean. If the evaporator coil gets dirty your air condition efficiency goes way down and your utility bill is going to go way up.
5) Traditional wood burning fireplace’s contribute to heat loss. Although aesthetically pleasing, open front fire places can suck warm air out of your home. So use them sparingly and keep the damper closed when not in use.
6) Open the Blinds & Drapes. During the day, open blinds and drapes on the south side of the home to let sun light in. Solar energy is free, comfortable heat. If you have a variable speed blower, solar energy could heat your entire home during the day. At dusk go ahead and close those drapes and blinds to keep the heat in.
7) Humidification Keeps You Warmer. Keep the humidity up in the living space of your home. Moist air is more comfortable than cold dry air. You can actually lower your thermostat setting by raising your humidity level.
8) Dehumidifiers Keep Basements Dry. Using one of these in your basement (non-living space) can help add to your comfort level by keeping moisture out of your basement. These can also keep mold from developing on cement/block walls or in the weep space around the perimeter of your basement.
9) Reduce the use of Exhaust Fans. Exhaust fans serve a purpose but use them sparingly as they not only help remove odors from the home but heat as well so use them only as necessary.
10) Saving energy is not a passive sport. YOU must manage your system. By that we mean you must take a active roll in what level you keep your family comfortable. Manage the thermostat and Humidistat. Open and close blinds and drapes at appropriate times of day and check or change your filter when it gets dirty.
11) Upgrade your Heating System. If your system is more than 10-15 years old you may want to consider installing a new higher efficiency system. The newer equipment is not only more efficient but runs quieter and in most cases features a variable speed or modulating blower which keeps your home at a higher comfort level.
